ETHOS & MORES IN SOCIETY: a discussion
What are Ethos and Mores, and what do they mean to me?
Oxford Dictionary:
Ethos:
1. Originally a Greek term, "ethos" (ἦθος) signifies "character," "custom," or "habit".
2. It encompasses the foundational values, beliefs, and spirit of a person, group, or
culture.
Mores:
1. Derived from the Latin word "mores," it refers to the established customs, manners,
and social norms that define what is considered morally acceptable or unacceptable
within a particular society or culture.
2. Mores are the actual observable behaviors and social expectations that guide how
individuals interact with other individuals within a society.
So, in effect Ethos and Mores are the what we do, within a society, and how we do it. They are our behaviors and the reasons behind, or the reasons for those particular behaviors.
Understanding your Ethos and Mores. A simple exercise.
Get a pencil or pen and some paper. Write down several (at least 10) Social Behaviors that are acceptable and those not acceptable to you. Something as simple as; Stopping at a red light, or as serious as not murdering someone. Think about this. It is a serious exercise in understanding who you are and where you stand on important, personal/social behaviors. Knowing yourself provides a stronger sense of self, a more clear self-image, and greater self-value. Let's educate ourselves and gain the strength to stand-up for who we are.
